Immersion Cooling Fluids for Data Centers

ClearGuard’s Role in Next-Gen Data Cooling

As data centers scale to meet the exponential demands of AI, cloud computing, and high-performance workloads, cooling infrastructure must evolve. Immersion cooling fluids, particularly dielectric oils, are revolutionizing thermal management by replacing energy-intensive air cooling with fluid-based systems.

At ClearGuard, we engineer immersion fluids specifically for mission-critical environments. Our DataGuard Pro and DataGuard Pro UV lines are optimized for thermal performance, material compatibility, and long-term dielectric stability, helping data center operators unlock next-level efficiency and sustainability.

ClearGuard’s Dielectric Immersion Fluids

The DataGuard product family is engineered for data center immersion applications:

The Clear Choice for data center resilience

A high-performance single-phase dielectric oil offering excellent thermal stability, low viscosity, and superior rubber compatibility. Prevents delamination of server seals and supports long immersion life.

The Clear Choice for protecting against the elements

All the benefits of DataGuard Pro with advanced UV inhibitors: ideal for facilities with natural light exposure, skylights, or outdoor enclosures. Protects both the oil and internal components from UV degradation.

ClearGuard immersion fluids are rigorously tested for:

  • Thermal conductivity
  • Dielectric strength
  • Material compatibility (gaskets, rubbers, PCBs)
  • Oxidative and photochemical stability

What is Immersion Cooling?

Immersion cooling is a method where IT hardware - servers, GPUs, switches, etc - is submerged directly in a dielectric fluid, eliminating the need for fans and traditional HVAC. Two primary forms are used:

  • Single-phase cooling – The fluid absorbs heat and remains in its liquid state. It is then pumped through a cooling loop and recirculated. This is the method we use. It is reliable, simple, and efficient for most applications.
  • Two-phase cooling – The fluid boils at the surface of hot components, turning into vapor. The vapor is then condensed back into liquid in a closed loop. While this approach can provide higher thermal transfer, it requires complex infrastructure and costly specialty fluids.

Immersion cooling is particularly advantageous because it offers superior heat dissipation compared to traditional air cooling, allowing for higher server densities and more efficient operation of data centers. In hot environments, where air cooling can be less effective due to high ambient temperatures, immersion cooling provides a more reliable and energy-efficient solution.

ClearGuard’s dielectric oils are purpose-formulated for single-phase immersion systems, combining superior heat transfer with long fluid life and compatibility across various hardware and enclosures.

Benefits of Immersion Cooling Fluids

Enhanced Thermal Efficiency

Dielectric immersion fluids deliver dramatically improved heat dissipation: up to 1000x more effective than air: keeping high-density hardware consistently below thermal limits.

Lower Energy Consumption

Immersion cooling can reduce energy usage by 30–50% compared to traditional cooling systems, eliminating fans, chillers, and airflow constraints.

Greater Hardware Reliability

By maintaining stable thermal conditions, immersion fluids reduce thermal cycling and prevent component fatigue, extending the life of CPUs, GPUs, and power supplies.

Environmental Sustainability

ClearGuard’s DataGuard fluids are low-toxicity, non-ozone-depleting, and recyclable, supporting low-PUE initiatives and green data center certifications.

Applications in Data Infrastructure

Immersion cooling is ideal for:

  • Hyperscale data centers and cloud platforms.
  • AI training clusters and HPC environments.
  • Edge computing deployments with space and energy constraints.
  • Modular data center designs for remote or mobile operations.
  • Sustainable facilities aiming for LEED or carbon-neutral status.

ClearGuard provides end-to-end support for immersion integration including fluid handling, filling, monitoring, and lifecycle planning.

Common Questions About Immersion Fluids

How often do immersion fluids need to be replaced?

High-stability fluids like DataGuard Pro can last several years in sealed systems with proper monitoring.

Can immersion fluids damage server materials?

Some market offerings have been known to, but our fluids are tested for rubber, gasket, PCB, and cable compatibility to prevent delamination or degradation.

Is immersion cooling viable for retrofits?

Yes, especially with containerized solutions or modular pod designs. ClearGuard can recommend fluid specs based on your deployment model.

Technical FAQs

What’s the dielectric breakdown voltage of DataGuard Pro?

All performance details can be found on the factsheet on the DataGuard Pro product page.

How does DataGuard Pro UV differ from standard oils?

It includes special UV-blocking agents to prevent polymer degradation and fluid aging in light-exposed environments. This dual-action approach ensures long-term performance, reliability, and sustainability of both the fluid and the systems it protects.
